What is XRP, in one sentence?

XRP is a digital currency built to move value between different money systems in seconds, for a fraction of a cent.

Think of it as a universal "bridge" for money. If someone needs to turn dollars into pesos, XRP can sit in the middle of that swap and settle it almost instantly, instead of the payment crawling through several banks over days. It runs on its own network called the XRP Ledger.

What is the XRP Ledger?

The XRP Ledger is a public, open-source blockchain that has run continuously since 2012.

A blockchain is just a shared record of transactions that thousands of computers keep in sync, so no single company owns the master copy. The XRP Ledger is the network XRP lives on. It confirms payments every few seconds and is maintained by a worldwide group of independent operators called validators.

What is the difference between XRP and Ripple?

Ripple is a company. XRP is the digital currency. They are not the same thing.

Ripple is a private payments-technology business that builds software for banks and uses XRP in some of its products. XRP is an independent asset that would keep existing even if Ripple disappeared tomorrow. Mixing up the company and the currency is the single most common beginner mistake, so it is worth locking in early.

How is XRP different from Bitcoin?

Bitcoin was designed to be digital gold you hold. XRP was designed to be money you move.

Bitcoin transactions can take around ten minutes or more and are secured by "mining," which uses large amounts of electricity. XRP settles in three to five seconds, costs a tiny fraction of a cent, and does not use energy-hungry mining. Different goals, different design; one is built for storing value, the other for fast transfer.

What is XRP actually used for?

Its main real-world job is cross-border payments, moving money between countries.

Ripple's payments product uses XRP as the bridge asset to send money internationally without banks pre-loading cash in foreign accounts. Ripple reported roughly $1.3 trillion processed through its payments network in the second quarter of 2025. People also hold and trade XRP, but the practical use case is fast, cheap settlement.

How fast and how cheap is it, really?

About three to five seconds per payment, for a tiny fraction of a cent in fees.

The network can handle up to about 1,500 transactions per second. For comparison, a traditional international bank transfer can take one to five business days and cost anywhere from a few dollars to tens of dollars. That speed-and-cost gap is the entire point of XRP.

How many XRP are there? Can more be created?

100 billion XRP were created at the start, and no new XRP can ever be made.

Unlike Bitcoin, which is slowly mined into existence, all XRP already exists. A tiny amount is destroyed as a fee with every transaction, so the total very slowly shrinks over time. Ripple holds a large amount, most of it locked in escrow that releases on a fixed public schedule.

Is XRP legal? Was it not in a lawsuit?

Yes, XRP is legal to buy and sell in the United States, and the lawsuit is over.

In 2023 a U.S. court ruled that XRP sold on public exchanges is not a security, and the SEC v. Ripple case fully closed on August 22, 2025. That is why major U.S. exchanges list it. For the full documented breakdown of the ruling, see our Answers page.

How do people buy XRP?

Most people buy XRP on a regulated cryptocurrency exchange using a bank transfer or card.

The usual steps are: create an account on an exchange that lists XRP, verify your identity (a legal requirement called KYC), deposit money, then buy XRP. Beginners typically start on a well-known exchange; more advanced users later move their XRP to a personal wallet they control. Always confirm you are on the real website, because scam look-alike sites are common.

Where is XRP stored, and what is a wallet?

A crypto wallet holds the private keys that prove you own your XRP.

If you leave XRP on an exchange, the exchange holds the keys for you, which is convenient but means you are trusting them. A personal wallet, either an app or a small hardware device, puts you in control, summed up by the phrase "not your keys, not your coins." The trade-off: with self-custody, if you lose your recovery phrase, no company can restore your funds, so it must be backed up carefully.

Is XRP a good investment?

XRP Chronicle does not give price predictions or financial advice, on purpose.

What we can say plainly: crypto, including XRP, is volatile and can lose value quickly, anyone promising guaranteed returns is a red flag, and you should never invest money you cannot afford to lose. Whether it belongs in your portfolio is a personal decision best made with your own research and, if needed, a licensed financial advisor. Our job is to keep the facts straight so your decision is an informed one.

Not financial advice. Do your own research.
